A free online video compressor that keeps files on your device

Make MP4, MOV, and WebM videos smaller for sharing, email, or storage. This tool reads a file you select and creates a new MP4 entirely in your browser. Your video is never uploaded for processing, and you do not need an account.

How to compress a video

  1. Choose a local video. Use an SDR video up to 250 MB, 10 minutes, and 4K resolution. Support depends on the codecs your browser can read.
  2. Pick your settings. Start with Smaller file to aim for half the original size. Smallest file also lowers resolution and frame rate. Higher quality uses a larger size target. Custom gives you control of each setting.
  3. Compress, preview, and download. Keep the tab open while your device works. Check the result and save the MP4. Your original is never modified.

What changes when you compress video?

Bitrate is the amount of data used each second. Lowering it reduces file size, but can soften text or create visible blocks. Resolution controls the dimensions of the image: 720p fits within 1280 × 720 pixels, or 720 × 1280 for portrait video. We preserve the aspect ratio and never enlarge your video.

Frame rate controls how many images appear per second. A lower cap can save space, but makes movement less smooth. Variable frame-rate sources are converted to a fixed rate using their detected source rate, or your lower cap. For screen recordings, keep enough resolution to read small text and preview the result before sending it to someone.

Video compression questions

Does this upload my video to a server?

No. Video reading, compression, preview, and download all happen locally in your browser. No video is uploaded to our servers, Cloudflare, or another processing service.

Will the output be exactly the estimated file size?

No. The percentage sets an approximate size target by calculating a video bitrate. Actual output varies with the video and your browser’s encoder. We show the actual file size after processing. Already efficient videos may not become smaller.

Can I compress video without losing quality?

Re-encoding video can lose detail. The Higher quality preset uses a larger size target, but does not guarantee lossless output. Try a larger target if text or movement looks worse in the preview.

Which browsers and video formats work?

This tool is designed for current desktop browsers with WebCodecs and H.264 encoding support. Start with the latest Chrome or Edge. MP4, MOV, and WebM containers are accepted, but their internal codecs must be supported on your device. HDR video and sources over 120 fps are not supported in this version. Mobile support is not guaranteed.

What happens to the audio?

Presets keep the primary audio track. Compatible AAC audio is copied; other audio is converted to AAC when your browser supports it. We stop if sound cannot be preserved, and you can choose Custom to remove it. Only the main video and audio tracks are included; subtitles and additional tracks are not carried over.

Why are there file size and duration limits?

Your device does the work and holds the output in memory. The initial limits of 250 MB and 10 minutes keep processing manageable. Even within those limits, performance depends on your available memory, hardware, and browser. Cancel at any time if you need to stop.
